FTC approves expanded automatic Amazon Prime refunds, raising cap to $200

The Federal Trade Commission said in September 2026 that Amazon will accelerate and broaden refunds to consumers under its $2.5 billion Prime‑enrollment settlement. Under a court‑approved revision, the maximum refund per consumer rises from $51 to $200 and payments will be made automatically, with the first round for users of 11‑20 Prime benefits beginning October 1, 2026.

As of September 2026, Amazon had already paid out more than $845 million in redress to consumers. The revised order makes consumers who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits during a one‑year period eligible for automatic refunds, a group that was not included in earlier payment phases. Those refunds will be delivered electronically via Venmo or PayPal or by mailed check, with no claim forms or additional paperwork required. If the aggregate amount paid does not reach a specified threshold by February 2027, Amazon will issue an extra $149 to consumers who have already received a refund, bringing the maximum possible payment to $200. Those supplemental payments are scheduled to begin by April 2027 and will also be distributed automatically.

“The revised order will ensure more consumers who were harmed by Amazon’s deceptive enrollment and cancellation practices benefit from the FTC’s historic settlement,” Christopher Mufarrige, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection said.

“This action underscores the FTC’s commitment to ensuring companies return money to consumers harmed by unlawful and deceptive business practices,” Christopher Mufarrige, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection said.

The FTC’s September 2025 settlement required Amazon to provide up to $1.5 billion in redress for deceptive Prime enrollment and a separate $1 billion civil penalty. By September 2026 the company had distributed more than $845 million of that redress, prompting the joint motion to accelerate and expand payments.
