Amazon urges rigorous AI testing while rejecting industry slowdown call

Amazon called for rigorous testing and strong safeguards before releasing new AI models, but said it would not support an industry-wide slowdown in development. The stance followed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s nearly 4,000‑word essay urging the sector to slow AI progress.

Amazon’s spokesperson said the company does not see progress and safety as mutually exclusive and that models should be released only after rigorous testing and strong safeguards. Amazon builds its own AI models using AWS and its artificial general intelligence division, the same technology that powers the Alexa voice assistant. Its AWS unit provides infrastructure to other AI firms, and its Bedrock platform lets businesses access models from a range of providers. The company noted that the debate is significant because it is increasing AI investment across both its retail and technology businesses. Amazon had previously stayed out of the broader AI safety debate as pressure mounts on tech firms to balance innovation with risk. Prior to this statement, Amazon had remained silent on the issue until late Wednesday.

“We don’t see it as a choice between progress and safety,” adding that models should undergo “rigorous testing and strong safeguards” before release,” Amazon spokesperson said.

Before Amazon’s comment, leaders at OpenAI, xAI, Google DeepMind and Microsoft had backed a more cautious approach to AI development after Amodei’s essay. Amazon had stayed silent on the matter until late Wednesday, after previously avoiding the debate.
