Etsy pilots Class 8 electric trucks on Texas route to cut freight emissions

Etsy is deploying Class 8 battery-electric trucks in Texas as part of a pilot program aimed at reaching net-zero emissions by 2040, according to environmental impact lead Sam Brundrett. Through the Green Market Activation coalition, Etsy will pay for Environmental Attribute Certificates that offset the higher cost of running electric trucks versus diesel.

The pilot, which includes Amazon, eBay, Green Worldwide Shipping, Meta and Google, now has 63 members and is scheduled to launch in early 2027. Nevoya has been selected as the carrier and plans to deploy new battery-electric trucks late this year and early 2027, using charging infrastructure being built with Greenlane Infrastructure on the Houston‑Dallas corridor. Etsy’s commitment under the four‑year GMA agreement is to purchase a defined volume of zero‑emission trucking certificates measured in tonne‑kilometers, not tied to specific marketplace shipments. By 2030, Etsy targets a 52% reduction in scope 3 emissions per dollar of gross profit relative to its 2020 baseline.

“By 2030, the company aims to lower its scope 3 emissions per dollar of gross profit by 52% from its 2020 baseline,” Sam Brundrett, environmental impact lead at Etsy said.

“The certificates help cover the additional cost of operating electric trucks compared with diesel trucks,” Sam Brundrett, environmental impact lead at Etsy said.

The pilot was initially announced in January and is done in partnership with the Center for Green Market Activation (GMA) and Smart Freight Centre. The coalition also includes Amazon, eBay, Green Worldwide Shipping, Meta, and most recently, Google. The GMA pilot is focused on the Houston‑Dallas route due to significant freight volumes moving in both directions between the two cities.
