Georgia Ports Authority’s Savannah terminal hits 60% completion

Georgia Ports Authority announced that its $1.6 billion redevelopment of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal surpassed the 60% completion mark, with a 2,650-foot berth now finished. The project will expand the terminal’s annual capacity from 200,000 to 1.75 million twenty-foot equivalent units.

Work continues on the container-yard, with the first phase slated for completion in mid-fall 2027 and the full yard expected by the end of 2028. The truck gate is already operational and will ultimately feature 12 inbound lanes and six outbound lanes. A $29 million overpass now directs departing trucks straight to U.S. 17 and Interstate 16, keeping them off nearby neighborhood streets. The renovated berth is ready to handle the largest container vessels calling at Savannah. The project also includes upgrades to rail connections that will improve intermodal transfers between the port and inland distribution centers. Environmental mitigations were built into the plan, including stormwater management systems and habitat restoration near the terminal.

“The renovated berth is fully completed and ready for big ships,” Griff Lynch, Chief Executive, Georgia Ports Authority said.

The Ocean Terminal redevelopment is part of Georgia Ports Authority’s 10-year port master plan, which calls for roughly $5 billion in capacity investments across the state. Under that plan, the authority intends to add five container berths in Savannah and one roll-on/roll-off berth in Brunswick. In August, Savannah moved 529,523 TEUs, with loaded exports up 4.2% and imports up 1.5% year-over-year.
