WEX executive says AI agents need payment controls to act safely

At the PYMNTS B2B Payments Event 2026, Ryan Taylor, SVP Product Management – Mobility & Payments at WEX, said AI agents need three elements—context, controls, and clarity—to act safely. He noted that virtual cards already restrict merchant, amount, timing and transaction count, turning those limits into programmable permissions for machines.

Payment data supplies the context AI needs, showing who is spending, where money moves, what is bought and whether a transaction looks odd. While AI can decide that an invoice should be paid or a fuel purchase is legitimate, only the payment system can enforce whether the agent actually has authority to move the money. Taylor warned against giving agents open-ended access to corporate bank accounts, saying controls must govern how and when they can execute payments and how money flows to manage risk. He suggested the future enterprise payments stack could work less like traditional plumbing and more like an API that grants financial authority on demand.

“Taylor argued that effective artificial intelligence systems therefore require three elements: context, controls and clarity,” Ryan Taylor, SVP Product Management – Mobility & Payments at WEX said.

“One of the main reasons virtual cards are so compelling as we look towards an agentic future is that controls are built directly into the payments themselves,” Ryan Taylor, SVP Product Management – Mobility & Payments at WEX said.

Before this discussion, enterprises had to stitch together operational data and payment execution manually, a process that created delays and errors as transaction volumes grew. AI systems have improved at spotting suspicious invoices, fueling anomalies and price drifts, but they lacked the authority to act on those insights.
