AI agents gain payment ability but need identity and integration safeguards

In September 2026, Chris Trainor of Paymentus told PYMNTS that AI agents can now change autopay settings, resolve billing disputes, set up payment arrangements and move money, but only with trusted identity and integrated systems. He warned that without a unified identity layer and AI‑driven integration across billing, payments, wallets and service systems, autonomous commerce remains limited.

Trainor described a trusted customer identity layer as a persistent link between an authenticated user and their accounts, policies, payment credentials, permissions and workflows. He said authentication remains foundational in an AI landscape, allowing agents to move beyond conversation to action. The real bottleneck today is not model intelligence but integration, as customer data, billing rules, payments and preferences often live in separate systems. AI‑powered integration is emerging as an overlooked solution, using models to interpret schemas and connect workflows without replacing existing records.

“Large language models are probabilistic, and financial execution can’t be,” Chris Trainor, head of platform strategy, innovation and AI at Paymentus said.

While the first wave of generative AI rewarded systems that could understand and produce language, the next wave is being asked to execute.
