CMA CGM declares General Average on 8,000-teu Petra after container fire

CMA CGM yesterday declared General Average on the 8,000-teu CMA CGM Petra, which suffered a fire in one of its containers on 23 August while en route from Singapore to Colombo. The vessel was later towed to Port Klang, where some 450 containers were unloaded for inspection.

General Average security will be required from all cargo interests before their goods can be delivered. WK Webster is liaising with the appointed average adjusters to finalize the form and wording of the required securities. A fire expert has been arranged to attend the vessel to investigate the cause and origin of the blaze.

“General Average security will be required from all Cargo Interests prior to the delivery of their cargo,” W K Webster, cargo claims consultancy said.

“We are liaising with the appointed Average Adjusters regarding the form and wording of the General Average securities required and a further update will follow shortly in this respect,” WK Webster, cargo claims consultancy said.

Earlier this month the English Commercial Court awarded $13m to Maersk after determining that a fire on the 8,400-teu Maersk Seoul in July 2015 was caused by improperly packed calcium hypochlorite. The court found that the shipper breached the IMDG Code warranty, while noting Maersk’s own dangerous‑goods checks were lacking but not causal.
