FedEx launches $20 Authenticated Delivery service for high-value shipments

FedEx introduced its Authenticated Delivery service on September 16, charging $20 per package for select expedited services in the U.S. and Canada. The option uses QR code authentication to release packages only to authorized recipients, aiming to curb fraud and theft for luxury goods, electronics, healthcare, aerospace and collectibles.

Upon delivery, the recipient must show the QR code to the FedEx driver, who scans and validates it before releasing the package. The service is available with FedEx First Overnight, Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, 2Day, 2Day A.M. and Express Saver for domestic shipments, and with most international package services except FedEx International Ground. Authenticated Delivery shipments cannot be subject to address changes, hold‑at‑location requests or redirect‑to‑hold, but recipients may place a temporary vacation hold on the package. If a delivery attempt fails, FedEx may reattempt up to three times; after the third unsuccessful attempt the package is returned to the sender. The QR code is generated at shipment creation and sent to the recipient via email or SMS, ensuring only the intended party can authorize release.

“The future of delivery isn’t just moving packages quickly. It’s about building greater trust throughout the delivery process,” Neil Gibson, FedEx SVP of global customer experience said.

The launch of FedEx Authenticated Delivery marks another way the carrier is pushing to draw higher-value packages into its network to boost profitability. Rival UPS has also bolstered its options for more secure package delivery in recent years; its DeliveryDefense tool weighs loss frequency and delivery attempts to predict successful delivery likelihood and lets shippers reroute at‑risk shipments to alternate drop‑off locations.
