Fiserv delays FIUSD launch while hosting North Dakota’s Roughrider stablecoin

Fiserv has postponed its own FIUSD stablecoin launch while its digital asset platform went live last week hosting the Bank of North Dakota’s Roughrider stablecoin. The platform now makes Roughrider available to about 90 banks and credit unions in the state, according to an Oct. 2 report from Robert W. Baird analysts.

Fiserv said in June 2025 that it would launch FIUSD by the end of the year alongside a digital asset platform for hosting stablecoins. Although the exact timing for FIUSD is now unclear, the company remains committed to the coin and continues to develop its embedded finance capabilities. The platform’s reach is bolstered by Fiserv’s core banking systems, which support over 300 million bank accounts and five to six million merchants globally. Fiserv’s shift comes after the July 2025 Genius Act signed by President Trump, which created a regulatory framework for digital assets, and amid pressure from activist shareholder Jana Partners to cut costs and adopt Palantir technology.

“We have over 300 million bank accounts on our core banking systems; we have over five to six million merchants globally, so when you talk to anybody that's looking and operating in the digital asset space, they talk about how many endpoints or how many nodes are on that network. The more nodes you have, the more efficient or proficient you can be in developing new areas or ways to exchange value on that network,” Sunil Sachdev, head of embedded finance, Fiserv said.

“Roughrider checked a lot of boxes. We, as a financial infrastructure provider for the last four decades, always build systems and capabilities that will help our financial institution clients and our merchant clients exchange value in a very efficient way and provide choice to their customers, whether they be retail customers or commercial customers,” Sunil Sachdev, head of embedded finance, Fiserv said.
