Gartner says only 5% will automate 10% of supply chain planning by 2030
Gartner predicts that only 5 percent of organizations implementing supply chain automation will automate at least 10 percent of their planning decisions by 2030. The forecast, based on Gartner surveys and client interactions, distinguishes between AI that supports decisions and AI that makes them autonomous.
Gartner’s survey polled 394 supply chain professionals from companies with at least $250 million in annual revenue. Despite $40 billion in enterprise AI investment, a MIT study found 95 percent of organizations are not yet seeing any returns. A Kinaxis poll of over 2,000 leaders showed 41 percent expect autonomous supply chains at scale within one to two years, while only one in eight have fully embedded AI governance.
“Spending millions on supply chain planning automation can expand technical capabilities, but investment alone does not create AI readiness,” Buse Aras, director analyst in Gartner’s supply chain practice said.
In August, a Gartner survey showed that more than half of supply chain officers were unsure about their AI return on investment despite significant spending. A MIT landmark study found that despite funneling $40 billion into enterprise investment, 95 percent of organizations are not yet seeing any returns. Earlier this year, Kinaxis surveyed over 2,000 supply chain leaders across nine markets, reporting that two‑fifths (41 percent) expect autonomous supply chains at scale within one to two years, while only one in eight have been fully embedded with AI governance.
