Kodiak picks IKEA for driverless freight launch in Texas, Louisiana by 2025

Kodiak has named IKEA as its launch partner for driverless long-haul trucking, aiming to begin commercial service before the end of 2025. The initial driverless runs will use the Houston‑to‑Frisco, Texas corridor that Kodiak has traveled daily with a safety driver for the past four years.

Kodiak reports it has logged close to 4 million miles of autonomous testing over more than seven years. To meet state requirements, Kodiak will integrate its trucks with PrePass’s weigh‑station bypass system, which will relay pre‑trip inspection data to enforcement officers as the vehicles approach inspection sites. Under the CVSA‑developed enhanced inspection standard for autonomous vehicles, each truck must undergo a near‑annual inspection every four days with zero defects permitted. The program will launch in Texas and Louisiana, with plans to expand along neighboring state freight corridors, and PrePass notes its bypass network has delivered over $12 billion in fleet savings over three‑plus decades.

“As we were thinking about who the right partners would be to launch that, IKEA was at the top of our list,” Daniel Goff, vice president of external affairs at Kodiak said.

“PrePass has previously attributed more than $12 billion in fleet savings over three-plus decades to its bypass network, primarily through fuel and time efficiencies,” Chas Wurster, chief technology officer at PrePass said.

Kodiak has been moving IKEA freight daily on the Houston‑to‑Frisco route with a safety driver for four years. Over more than seven years of testing, Kodiak has accumulated close to 4 million miles of autonomous operation.
