Savannah port moves 1.03 million TEUs to start fiscal year

The Georgia Ports Authority reported that Savannah’s port handled 1.03 million twenty-foot equivalent units in July and August, the first two months of its fiscal year. That volume represents a 2.2% increase over the same period a year earlier.

In August alone, the port moved 529,523 TEUs, essentially unchanged from a year ago. Loaded exports rose 4.2%, adding nearly 4,700 TEUs to reach 117,242, while loaded imports increased 1.5%, adding about 3,800 TEUs to total 265,859. Average truck turn time for dual import‑export transactions was 43 minutes, 6.5 minutes below the terminal’s six‑month average. Nearly 80% of Savannah’s truck transactions are dual moves, and the gate processes roughly 15,000 trucks each weekday between 4 a.m. and 6 p.m. Officials note that ongoing investments in berth capacity and rail links aim to sustain the upward trend.

“We're off to a strong start, with more than a million TEUs moving through Georgia's ports in the first two months of the fiscal year,” Kevin Price, GPA President said.

In August, the port’s volume was essentially flat year over year, with loaded exports up 4.2% and imports up 1.5%. Truck efficiency improved, as average turn times for dual moves dropped 6.5 minutes below the six‑month average.
