Amazon asks Meta to remove its store from Muse AI agent experience

Amazon asked Meta to remove its storefront from the Muse AI agent experience two weeks after the assistant launched and saw Meta’s shares climb 11%. The request follows Meta’s launch of Muse, an AI agent that can shop and pay on behalf of users without identifying itself.

Amazon said it was not given advance notice that Muse would access its online store and did not authorize the agent. The company said Muse does not identify itself when browsing and appears to capture and store shopper credentials. Amazon cited a need for third‑party applications to operate openly and respect retailers’ decisions about participation. The move echoes Amazon’s earlier legal action against Perplexity’s Comet AI agent, which is still pending after a U.S. appeals court overturned a temporary ban in August. Shopify announced it will enable Muse for agentic checkouts across all its stores using Shop Pay.

“We think it’s fairly straightforward that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate,” Lara Hendrickson, Amazon spokesperson said.

In April, Meta signed a deal with Amazon Web Services to use its chips for agentic AI. Amazon has previously blocked Perplexity’s Comet AI agent from accessing its site and is currently litigating that case. Earlier this year Amazon piloted its own “Buy for Me” feature, which lets shoppers buy from external sellers through Amazon’s platform.
