Amazon cuts about 1,000 roles in latest workforce reduction

Amazon eliminated approximately 1,000 roles across its Stores, customer service, marketplace support and retail engineering teams on 6 October 2026. The cuts were disclosed via internal emails and affected employees in India and the UK, according to messages from an internal Slack channel with nearly 37,000 members. These reductions follow two earlier rounds that removed about 30,000 roles in October 2025 and January 2026.

An Amazon spokesperson told Business Insider that only a small number of positions, mainly in the Stores business, were eliminated that day. Employees asked about severance packages, medical leave, internal transfer options and whether further notifications would follow. Amazon has also reached out to former workers, including those from prior layoffs, to fill openings in its Amazon Web Services and artificial intelligence divisions.

“a small number,” Amazon spokesperson said.

Since late 2022, Amazon has eliminated more than 57,000 corporate positions. This includes the 16,000 roles cut in January 2026 and the roughly 30,000 roles removed in the two rounds announced in October 2025 and January 2026.
