Waitrose adds ingredient rules to Good Health logo for 93% of shoppers
Waitrose recently updated its Good Health initiative to include ingredient criteria alongside nutritional standards, after research showed 93% of its Food Lovers prioritise avoiding ultra‑processed foods. The logo change builds on an additive‑reduction programme that has improved 110 own‑label products, cutting 220 unnecessary additives in the last 20 months.
To carry the updated Good Health logo, a product must meet ingredient standards that prohibit additives and unrecognisable ingredients commonly linked to ultra‑processed foods. Nutrition standards require at least one authorised health or nutrition claim, classification as non‑HFSS under the UK Nutrient Profile Score, and no red traffic lights, with exemptions for naturally occurring fats and sugars. Amber traffic lights for saturated fat are allowed only when no added saturated fat is present, and the new yellow logo will appear across a wide range of Waitrose own‑label products.
“Our customers look to us for guidance when it comes to making healthy choices, and this move enables us to support Food Lovers to identify even better choices,” Joanne Lunn, lead nutritionist at Waitrose said.
“The new yellow Good Health logo will be easily identifiable across a wide variety of Waitrose products, and will highlight healthy choices which have been labelled according to the new criteria of both ingredients as well as nutrition,” Joanne Lunn, lead nutritionist at Waitrose said.
Waitrose’s Good Health initiative originally helped shoppers identify healthier choices through low‑calorie and low‑fat metrics before shifting to positive nutrition and ingredient transparency. The update builds on an existing additive‑reduction programme that has already revised 110 own‑label products, eliminating 220 unnecessary additives over the past 20 months.
