Lidl UK installs video‑playback self‑checkouts in all new and existing stores
Lidl UK is rolling out new self‑checkout units that play live video of shoppers back to them while they scan items, deploying the units in every new UK store and fitting them into existing locations. The rollout also covers hundreds of Lidl and Kaufland stores in Germany.
Each unit includes built‑in overhead cameras, vertically mounted large‑format screens and LED lights that alert staff when a shopper needs assistance during scanning. To exit, customers must scan a receipt printed by the machine at a gate before leaving the store. In July, Lidl GB expanded its Lidl & Go self‑scanning trial to 37 additional UK stores, building on an initial seven‑store pilot that ran earlier in the year. Lidl & Go lets shoppers scan items with their smartphones, track spending in real time and finish purchase via the Lidl Plus app.
“The new self-checkouts are designed to be more customer friendly, enhancing the shopping experience while boosting efficiency,” Lidl spokesperson, RTIH said.
“The early response from the initial phase of Lidl & Go has been really encouraging. Customers are telling us they value the control and visibility it gives them over their spend, and the flexibility to shop at their own pace. This next wave of stores brings the feature to many more customers, and we’ll continue to take on board feedback to evolve the offering as we go,” Louise Weise, Chief Customer Officer, Lidl GB said.
Earlier in 2026, Lidl GB ran a seven‑store pilot of its Lidl & Go self‑scanning feature, which received positive feedback from shoppers.
