OAIC launches investigation into HeyCyan app maker Shenzhen Qingcheng
Australia’s privacy regulator launched an investigation on Wednesday into Shenzhen Qingcheng Future Technology, maker of the HeyCyan smart glasses app sold through Big W Marketplace and Amazon. The OAIC said it had been monitoring smart‑glass rollout since early 2026 and, in August, received a request from the Attorney‑General to examine privacy implications. The regulator sought information from Meta, Kmart, Google and Shenzhen Qingcheng, but the China‑based firm did not respond.
The regulator asked manufacturers and distributors how the glasses record information, who can access that data and where it is stored. The move adds to growing scrutiny of camera‑equipped smart glasses in Australia, where the government said in September it was considering blocking their use in government workplaces over privacy and security concerns.
