Shopify adds automated policy generation to speed store launches
On October 8, 2026, Shopify introduced automated generation for return and refund, contact information, terms of service, shipping, and legal notice policies to help merchants launch stores faster. The automated policies stay in sync with store settings and Shopify’s recommendations, while merchants remain responsible for ensuring compliance.
Merchants activate the feature by opening Settings > Policies in the Shopify admin interface.
They then choose the specific policy they wish to automate from the list of available options.
After selecting a policy, they toggle the Use automated policy switch to the on position.
Finally, they click the Save button to apply the automation.
Once enabled, the system automatically updates the policy whenever the underlying store settings change.
This synchronization ensures that the policy reflects the current configuration without manual intervention.
The automation applies to five distinct policy types: return and refund, contact information, terms of service, shipping, and legal notice.
For each of these policy types, the generated text aligns with Shopify’s current recommendations.
Shopify clarifies that the automation does not relieve the store owner of responsibility for the policy’s content.
Merchants must still review the automated policies to confirm they meet applicable legal requirements.
The feature is intended to reduce the time required to set up a new store or expand into additional markets.
By keeping policies up to date automatically, merchants can avoid the need for frequent manual edits as their store evolves.
