Shopify adds category metafields to Analytics for filtering and grouping reports

Shopify now makes category metafields available as dimensions and filters in its Analytics tool. Merchants whose products already have category metafields can use them immediately without any additional configuration.

Users can group sales reports by Color. Users can group sales reports by Material. Users can group sales reports by Fit. Users can group sales reports by Fabric. Users can group sales reports by Size. Users can group sales reports by Activity. Users can group sales reports by any other category metafield they have defined. Merchants can filter reports to a specific value such as organic cotton. Merchants can filter reports to a particular color. The metafields can be applied in Reports. The metafields can be applied in Explore. The metafields can be applied in the query editor. The process of categorizing products has not changed. Existing custom metafields continue to work exactly as before. When a product has multiple values for an attribute, Analytics combines them on a single row to avoid double‑counting sales.

Until now, the color, material, fit, and other attributes you set when you categorize a product stayed on the product page. To see which materials or colors actually sell, you had to export.
