Comscore reports ChatGPT’s AI prompt share falls to 50% as rivals gain

Comscore’s Q2 2026 AI Intelligence Report shows ChatGPT’s share of AI prompt volume fell from 70% to 50% between January and June 2026. Over the same period, Gemini’s share rose to 30% from 17% and Claude’s increased to 11% from 2%.

Overall AI assistant usage grew, with 35% of desktop users and 29% of mobile users visiting an assistant in June 2026, up from 25% and 12% in January 2025. Google’s AI Overviews in desktop search expanded from 25.8% of queries in July 2025 to 39.4% in June 2026. ChatGPT logged 168 million desktop conversations in June 2026 and its multiplatform visitation rose to 99 million from 59 million a year earlier.

“Publishers should stop asking ‘how do we show up in ChatGPT’ and start asking ‘where is our audience actually asking questions, and are we showing up there.’ That means measuring visibility per assistant and weighting it by where your readers are,” Michael King, founder and CEO of iPullRank said.

“The message isn’t that ChatGPT is winning the race. The message is AI assistants collectively are becoming a consumer behavior layer, and consumers are developing different relationships with different assistants,” Smriti Sharma, Comscore’s chief analytics and technology officer said.

Prior to the June 2026 snapshot, Claude’s desktop conversations had risen from 1.1 million in October 2025 to nearly 40 million by April 2026 before settling at 22.3 million in June. Gemini’s desktop conversations increased from 8 million to 89 million over the past year, reflecting its integration into Google, Android and Workspace.
