Consumers plan to spend $285 per household on Halloween this year
Consumers plan to spend an average of $285 per household on Halloween this year, according to a Deloitte survey of 1,500 U.S. shoppers. A third of respondents say they will spend more than they did last year, and over half intend to start buying by the end of September.
The survey breaks down the average spend into $66 for experiences and $219 for retailer purchases, with costumes and accessories averaging $57, decorations $54, candy food and beverages $48, and dining and social outings $32. About two thirds of shoppers will buy items in stores, while a third plan to purchase online; among store shoppers, 55% will go to grocery stores, 47% to big box retailers, 40% to discount or dollar stores, and 36% to specialty Halloween shops. The National Retail Federation forecasts total Halloween spending of $13.5 billion, up from $13.1 billion a year ago, and Bain & Company projects that November‑December holiday spending will exceed $1 trillion for the first time, rising 4.5% year over year. One in five Halloween shoppers said they will use buy now pay later services or other financing to pay for their purchases, the Deloitte survey found.
Last year’s Halloween spending totaled $13.1 billion, according to the same NRF report cited for this year’s forecast. Bain’s projection of more than $1 trillion for the November‑December period marks a 4.5% increase over the prior year’s holiday spending.
