Gap launches AI shopping tools across its brands 30 years after first website

Gap Inc. launched a suite of AI-powered shopping tools for all its brands on Monday, marking 30 years since the launch of its first e-commerce website in 1996. Starting Monday, shoppers can use Alta Daily for outfit suggestions based on schedule, budget and weather, and Daydream for natural‑language fashion ideas across Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy and Athleta.

Alta Daily curates outfit suggestions using a user’s schedule, budget and local weather forecast, and can pull items from both the shopper’s existing wardrobe and the brands’ current assortments. Daydream interprets everyday language to generate fashion ideas and has access to the full catalog of Gap Inc.’s four brands. Old Navy and Banana Republic customers can also describe desired items in natural language to conversational shopping agents embedded in those brands’ websites and apps. Gerjets cited a SmartCustomer survey showing that 45% of purchases consumers regretted making with AI assistance involved apparel and footwear.

“Our starting point is always the customer. AI should make shopping easier and more intuitive, not add complexity or take choice away from the customer,” Sven Gerjets, Chief Technology Officer said.
